Medium red beefsteak tomatoes, typically 8-12 oz, but can go substantially larger. Round and bulging with rounded shoulders. Near blemish-free skin, meaty texture for solid slices, and a rich, old-fashioned tomato flavor (balanced sweetness, not overly acidic).
Indeterminate, regular-leafed vines; midseason maturity (around 75-80 days). Good yields, suitable for containers (5+ gallon with sturdy staking) or open ground.
Excellent for fresh slicing, salads, BLTs, or canning/saucing. Productive even into late season with minimal cracking; drought-tolerant and vigorous.
HISTORY: Great Divide is attributed Joe Bratka's family breeding efforts. It was originally bred by his father and later discovered and preserved by Joe Bratka himself. The same lineage as other varieties like Red Barn and Mule Team, which Joe unearthed from old seeds stored in jars in a toolshed on their New Jersey property. He couldn't initially germinate them, so he sent samples to Dr. Carolyn Male, a prominent heirloom tomato expert and author of 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden, who successfully grew them out and helped distribute the seeds starting in the mid-1990s. The variety was publicly introduced around 2005.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
