Dr. Wyche's Yellow is an indeterminate heirloom beefsteak tomato celebrated for its large, flattened-globe fruits that typically weigh 10–16 ounces, though specimens up to 1–2 pounds are common under optimal conditions.
The smooth, golden-yellow to deep tangerine-orange skins encase meaty, low-acid flesh with few seeds, delivering an exceptionally rich, sweet, and complex flavor that rivals the best red and pink varieties—often described as "old-fashioned" with balanced tanginess.
Vines grow vigorously with regular foliage, maturing in 80–85 days and producing abundant yields suited for slicing, salads, sandwiches, or fresh eating, though they benefit from staking and consistent moisture to prevent cracking.
HISTORY: Originally named "Hot Yellow" by its developer, Dr. John Wyche—a Cherokee dentist, avid heirloom collector, and part-owner of the Kelly Miller Circus who wintered in Hugo, Oklahoma—this variety was bred in the mid-20th century using unique fertilizers like elephant manure from his circus connections and predator droppings to deter pests in his terraced mountaintop gardens. An early member of Seed Savers Exchange (SSE), Dr. Wyche shared seeds widely before his death in 1985, including a final batch sent to John D. Green (preserver of Cherokee Purple). Green passed it to tomato expert Craig LeHoullier in 1992, who grew it out and introduced it publicly via the SSE yearbook that year. Renamed in Wyche's honor, it gained acclaim in Carolyn J. Male's 1999 book 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden for its superior taste, and remains a staple in heirloom catalogs.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
