Chocolate Cherry is an indeterminate cherry tomato that produces abundant, uniform ¾–1 inch round fruits on long, productive trusses. The skin matures to a beautiful brick-red overlaid with dark purple-brown shoulders and stripes, giving a rich “chocolate” appearance when fully ripe. Inside, the flesh is deep red, juicy, and packed with a sweet, rich, slightly smoky flavor that many growers rate even higher than Black Cherry.
Plants are vigorous (6–8 ft), regular-leaf, begin ripening about 70 days from transplant, and continue heavy production until frost.
HISTORY: developed by Aaron Whaley (son of Seed Savers Exchange founders Kent and Diane Ott Whealy) through his company A.P. Whaley Seed Co. in the early 2000s. Aaron specifically selected for a more uniform, crack-resistant, and consistently flavored plant than the popular Black Cherry, using existing purple/red cherry lines and stabilizing the best performers over several generations. Introduced commercially around 2004–2005, it quickly became one of the most beloved and widely grown “chocolate” cherry tomatoes, now offered by virtually every major heirloom and specialty seed vendor.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
