"Gogosari"

Flattened, sweet peppers, 3–5 inches in diameter and 2–3 inches tall, heavily ribbed with 3–4 deep lobes that give them a distinctive “pumpkin” appearance. Thick, juicy walls. Ripen from green→ orange → bright red (most flavorful at full red).

Compact, bushy plants 18–30 inches tall and wide—excellent for containers or small gardens. Early-to-mid maturity (65–80 days from transplant to ripe fruit). Very heavy yielder, often loaded with 20–40+ fruits per plant. Sturdy stems still require staking. Good disease resistance and cold tolerance for an annuum; performs well in cooler summers.

Extremely sweet and juicy—one of the sweetest European heirloom peppers—with crisp, thick flesh and no bitterness. Outstanding raw or cooked; the thick walls hold up beautifully to stuffing and baking.

A traditional Romanian and Eastern European heirloom (the name “Gogosari” comes from the Romanian word “gogoasă,” meaning doughnut or bun, referring to the shape). Grown for generations throughout Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Balkans, where it is the classic pepper for pickling, stuffing (especially the famous “Gogosari murati” pickled peppers), and winter storage. Brought to North America by Eastern European immigrants and now cherished by seed-saver communities for its unique shape and superb sweetness.

In January 2017, at the Detroit Home & Garden seed swap in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I met an enthusiastic Romanian seed saver who spoke almost no English. His table was covered with carefully handwritten seed packets, and he proudly pointed to one variety. Years later, a longtime customer confirmed his treasured pepper is the classic Romanian heirloom known as Gogosari (or Gogoşari). We feel honored to keep his family’s tradition growing here in Michigan!
