Common oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a hardy perennial herb (zones 4–9) that forms low, spreading 18–24 inch mounds of small, dark-green, aromatic leaves on wiry stems. It prefers full sun and well-drained, even poor soil, and is highly drought-tolerant once established.

Summer brings clusters of tiny purple-pink flowers that attract bees. This is the standard culinary oregano used fresh or dried in Italian, Greek, and Mexican dishes. Reliable, low-maintenance, and strongly flavored.

Oregano has been used for centuries as a digestive aid, to relieve coughs and sore throats, and as a mild antiseptic for minor wounds. Modern studies confirm its essential oil (rich in carvacrol and thymol) has strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, supporting its traditional role in treating respiratory infections and inflammation.
