Dwarf Vates Blue Scotch Curled kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is a Scottish heirloom selected in the 1950s by the Vates Seed Company for improved cold tolerance and compact growth.
 
Forming neat 12–16 inch mounds of finely curled, blue-green leaves, it stays tender and sweet even through hard frosts and can even withstand several inches of snow after the hard autumn frost. 
 
It is notably heat-sensitive and quick to bolt in summer temperatures above 85°F.
 
Ideal for cool-season and overwintering gardens, it delivers reliable, flavorful harvests in small spaces where taller kales would struggle.
