Duckling (also known as Utyonok) is a compact, determinate dwarf tomato variety that produces abundant clusters of small to medium, golden-orange, lemon-shaped fruits with a distinctive pointed or nippled blossom end, typically weighing 1–3 oz each—perfect for snacking, salads, roasting, or fresh eating.
The smooth-skinned tomatoes offer a delightful, fruity-sweet flavor with a zingy tang and balanced acidity, often described as exceptionally tasty among early dwarfs. Plants are dwarf in stature, reaching just 24+/- inches tall with rugose, regular-leaf foliage that can appear "cupped" upward, spreading up to 24–36 inches wide; they are extremely early-maturing, cold-hardy, and productive, with minimal staking required.
PLEASE NOTE:
Foliage is naturally distinctive: the leaves frequently cup or curl upward, which can easily be mistaken for a sign of thirst or stress. This is simply a normal, genetic characteristic of the variety and does not indicate that the plants need water. Please do not overwater in response to the cupped leaves.
HISTORY: Utyonok, translating to "Duckling" originated as a commercial dwarf tomato variety developed in Russia, likely in the late 20th or early 21st century for short-season and container growing in cooler climates. It was bred for its extreme earliness, hardiness, and heavy fruit set. The open-pollinated strain entered international heirloom networks around 2010, gaining popularity among dwarf tomato enthusiasts. It has since been stabilized and distributed worldwide.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
