Catnip (Nepeta cataria), also called catswort or catmint, is a hardy perennial member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). It forms bushy 2–3 foot clumps of softly fuzzy, gray-green, heart-shaped leaves with a strong, minty aroma that drives many cats wild. From early summer onward it produces spikes of small, white to pale purple flowers.

Catnip thrives in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil; it tolerates poor, dry conditions and is highly drought-resistant once established. It handles air pollution well but appreciates afternoon shade in hot, humid climates. Shear spent flower spikes after the first bloom to encourage a second flush and keep plants tidy.

A fast-growing, low-maintenance, deer-resistant perennial, catnip is an excellent pollinator plant, drawing honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Perfect for cottage gardens, sensory gardens, herb beds, or children’s gardens—cats optional.
