Minnesota Midget is a pint-sized cantaloupe bred specifically for northern gardeners with short, cool summers. This remarkable little melon rockets to maturity in just 70 days from transplant, making it one of the fastest true cantaloupes available.
The plants are astonishingly compact, spreading only 3–4 feet across, yet they still manage to set and ripen up to six fruits per vine. Each melon is a perfect single-serving size, about 4 inches in diameter, with heavily netted skin that turns from green to pale tan when ripe. Slip the fruit from the vine when the stem separates easily and the blossom end is slightly soft. Inside, you’ll find vivid orange flesh that is thick, juicy, and almost candy-sweet, often reaching 12–14% sugar with that classic rich cantaloupe perfume.
Because the vines stay so small and well-behaved, Minnesota Midget is one of the very best melons for container growing. A single plant thrives in a 12–20 gallon pot or grow bag on a sunny patio, balcony, or deck. It also tucks beautifully into raised beds or small gardens where space is tight. No trellising is required, though a light straw mulch under the fruits keeps them clean and speeds ripening.
Quick Growing Tips
- Plant seedlings when soil is at least 70 °F.
- Plant in full sun with rich, well-drained soil.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; water at the base to prevent powdery mildew.
- When fruits reach full slip stage, reduce watering slightly to concentrate sweetness.
- Harvest promptly once ripe; these little gems can over-ripen quickly in hot weather.
Sold in 4" pot containing 3 vines.
