Golden Acre Early is a classic, dependable cabbage that has been a garden staple since the early 20th century. It forms beautiful, uniform, round heads averaging 5–7 inches in diameter and weighing 3–5 pounds. The heads are dense, crisp, and pale green with a tender, sweet flavor that shines whether eaten raw in salads and coleslaw or lightly cooked. Packed with vitamins C and K, it’s as nutritious as it is delicious.
This variety is prized for its earliness: heads mature in just 70–80 days from transplant, making it one of the fastest cabbages available and an ideal choice for shorter seasons or gardeners wanting an early summer harvest. Plants are compact (12–18 inches tall and wide), so they fit nicely into small gardens or raised beds.
Because it matures quickly and during warmer months, Golden Acre Early avoids many of the late-season pests and diseases that plague fall cabbages. However, early plantings are prime targets for cabbage worms, root maggots, and flea beetles. For clean, organic heads with virtually no spraying required, many experienced growers (myself included) now start transplants under protection and grow the entire crop beneath lightweight floating row cover or a low tunnel. The cover excludes egg-laying moths and beetles completely while still letting in light and water. After years of battling holes and worms, switching to this simple physical barrier finally delivered perfect heads every time—no chemicals, no daily scouting, just pure success.
Quick Growing Tips
- Transplant at 3–4 true leaves, spacing 12–18 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart.
- Choose rich, well-drained soil amended with plenty of compost.
- Keep soil consistently moist; uneven watering can cause heads to split.
- For organic success: cover immediately after transplanting with Agribon AG-19 or similar lightweight row cover, sealing the edges with soil or staples. Leave it on until harvest.
- Harvest when heads feel firm all the way through—don’t wait too long or they may split after rain.
