Amana Orange is a mid-to-later season, indeterminate open-pollinated beefsteak that produces consistently heavy yields of huge, glowing orange fruits averaging 1–2 lb, with many reaching 5 inches or more in diameter.
The fruits are oblate, distinctly fluted/ribbed, and almost blemish-free, with smooth, thin skin that glows in the sun. Inside, the flesh is dense yet juicy, low in seeds, and delivers an intense, rich, sweet flavor with pronounced tropical-fruit notes (often described as mango-pineapple) layered over classic tomato depth. Many growers rank it as the single best-tasting orange beefsteak available and a permanent “must-grow” variety.
Plants are large, vigorous, regular-leaf, and notably productive even in hot summers.
HISTORY: Amana Orange was introduced to the wider gardening world by Gary Staley of Brandon, Florida, who listed it in the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook in 1985. Gary named the tomato after the Amana Corporation (famous for refrigerators and radar ranges), where he worked for many years as a customer service manager. The original seed came from an elderly coworker whose family had grown the giant orange tomato for generations in the Amana Colonies region of Iowa (a German Pietist settlement known for its communal farming traditions). Whether the tomato actually originated in the Amana Colonies or was simply preserved there is uncertain, but the name stuck. Since its SSE debut, Amana Orange has become one of the most acclaimed and widely grown orange heirlooms worldwide, offered by virtually every major heirloom seed company.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
