Mom's Big Fat Grapes is a charming, open-pollinated, indeterminate large grape tomato that combines nostalgic family origins with outstanding garden performance. Saved by a daughter from her mother’s beloved plants and shared through grassroots seed networks in the mid-2000s, it grows on vigorous 6–8 ft vines that produce heavy, pendulous clusters of bright-red, elongated fruits—extra-large for a grape tomato at 1–1.5 inches long. The plump, thicker-skinned tomatoes are juicy yet meaty, resist cracking, hold exceptionally well on the vine and counter, and deliver a classic tangy-sweet tomato flavor with few seeds. Ripening around 72+ days from transplant, this highly productive mid-season variety is perfect for snacking, salads, dehydrating, roasting, or freezing, making it a hidden-gem favorite for gardeners who want bountiful, bite-sized heirlooms with real substance.
HISTORY: Mom's Big Fat Grapes originated from seed that a loving daughter saved from volunteer plants that reliably reseeded every year in her mother’s garden (probably in Indiana or Ohio). The seeds were sent to Trudi Greissle Davidoff of WinterSown.org with a handwritten note reading: “Saved by a loving daughter, these are yummy grape tomatoes, nice for salad or snacking, IND, 72+ DTM.” Trudi, having no further details and unable to recall the exact location or retain the original correspondence, gave the variety its whimsical name Mom's Big Fat Grapes and shared it through seed networks in the mid-2000s.
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
