Straight 8 is the iconic American slicing cucumber that most of us picture when someone says “home-grown cucumber.” Introduced by Ferry-Morse in 1935, it earned an All-America Selections award the same year and has been the benchmark for backyard slicers ever since.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS
- Fruit: 7–8 inches long × 2–2½ inches thick, perfectly straight, deep green with faint lighter stripes and small white spines that rub off easily. Classic cylindrical shape.
- Flesh: Crisp, juicy, medium-sized seed cavity, refreshing traditional cucumber flavor that’s a little sweeter when grown in warm, sunny conditions.
- Days to harvest: 58–65 days from transplant — reliably productive once summer heat arrives.
- Plant habit: Very vigorous vines (6–8 ft or more), definitely give them a strong trellis, fence, or plenty of room to roam.
- Yield: Heavy when happy — one or two well-grown plants can supply a family all season.
- Disease resistance: Moderate; does fine in most gardens but can catch powdery mildew or bacterial wilt in bad years (trellising and good airflow help a lot).
GROWING TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS
- Wait for genuinely warm soil (70 °F+) — it hates cold feet.
- Trellis or cage aggressively; fruits stay straighter and cleaner, and you avoid disease.
- Keep moisture steady; drought stress can cause slight bitterness or crooked fruits.
- Harvest at 7–8 inches for peak flavor and tenderness; they can get seedy and pithy if left too long.
Sold in 3 - pack.
