Aussie is a mid-season, indeterminate heirloom beefsteak that produces large, smooth, nearly blemish-free fruits averaging 12–20 oz (¾–1¼ lb), with some reaching 1½–2 lb in good conditions. The oblate to slightly ribbed globes ripen to a deep, glossy red and are almost completely coreless, with dense, meaty, bright-red flesh containing very few seeds. Flavor is outstanding—highly aromatic, rich, well-balanced, and classically “old-timey” with excellent sweetness and just enough acidity to keep it lively. Plants are vigorous, regular-leaf, very productive, and show good heat-set ability and general disease resistance. Maturity 80–90 days from transplant.
HISTORY: A traditional Australian family heirloom that was grown for generations in home gardens Down Under before being brought to North America. It first appeared in the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook in 1996, offered by member Thane Earle of White Bear Lake, Minnesota (SSE listing EARL), who received the seeds directly from a gardener in Australia. Earle described it as a long-time favorite in Australian backyards, often simply called “the big red” or “Grandma’s tomato.”
Sold as a single plant in a 3.5" pot.
