I've said it once and I'll keep saying it - you just can't get the same flavor profile in any other color tomato than you can in a black variety: deep, smokey, rich and complex are just a few of the adjectives used to describe these medium-sized, thin skinned beauties.
Plants are semi-determinate, which means they stay compact. Fruit size will vary from the beginning of the season to the end, but average about baseball size. If you make your own sauce, make sure to include one of these. Like all other black varieties, the amount of intensity of natural sunlight that the plant receives will determine how dark the fruits mature to. Additionally, as with all black fruited tomatoes, they will produce much heavier in cooler climates which can mean early in the season and then again towards the end of summer.
